Why Money Alone Won’t Make You ‘Rich’: A Truthful Look at Wealth, Fulfilment & Serving Others

‘They’ are constantly trying to convince us that we need more to be more. Through social media, the economy reports and subliminal advertising

  • More money.

  • More status.

  • More designer labels.

  • More of everything, really.

But here’s what I know to be true: we are not here to acquire, we are here to contribute.

And when we focus on serving others - truly enriching someone else’s life - we are rewarded in ways that far exceed anything a flashy car or expensive handbag could offer. Not just financially (although yes, that can be part of it), but spiritually, emotionally, and energetically. We step into a state of flow. A state of grace. A state of purpose.

Because at our core, people serving people is the greatest gift there is - to give and to receive.

So, when we set our financial goals, it’s important to ask ourselves some deeper questions. Not “how much do I want to earn this year”… but “why do I want it?”

What is the real reason (if any) behind the number? What will it allow me to experience, build, support or change?

Wanting financial abundance isn’t wrong. In fact, I believe money in the hands of the right people - people with values, compassion, and integrity - can actually transform the world.

The only driver behind your financial goals shouldn’t be to accumulate for the sake of accumulation. If your ‘why’ is rooted in ego or competition or the pursuit of keeping up, you’d be chasing something that will never truly satisfy you.

Because here’s the hard truth (and yes, I’m going to say it):

Using money purely to make a statement about your status is one of the most unattractive traits a person can have.

There’s a big difference between enjoying nice things and needing nice things to feel worthy: Between loving beauty and being defined by your possessions. Between wanting success and needing to prove it.

  • Gratitude for the things in life we take for granted grounds us. It reminds us of what actually makes us rich.

  • Our health.

  • Our relationships.

  • The fact that we can walk into a kitchen and prepare a meal.

  • The roof over our head.

  • The people who inspire us to become better - not because they’re ahead of us, but because they walk beside us with open hearts and generous spirits.

It’s easy to get caught up in comparison and competition, especially in business. To look at what others are buying, doing, earning, wearing - and feel like we’re behind. But real wealth is quiet. It doesn’t need to shout.

And so, instead of asking '“How can I get more?”, what if we asked “Whose life can I make better when I get more?”

Because when our money flows into places that create real value - whether it’s a helping hand to a friend, a donation to a cause, a surprise treat for someone who’s been struggling, or even a kind gesture to a total stranger - it becomes a force for good.

  • That’s the kind of money that multiplies.

  • That’s the kind of abundance that lasts.

  • That’s the kind of wealth that fills your heart, not just your bank account.

Here’s a challenge for you:

  • Who can you make a difference to this week?

  • Who could use a little light, a little lift, a little love right now?

  • Where can your money travel that will create joy, comfort, or hope?

Maybe it’s your sister who’s been silently struggling. Maybe it’s your elderly neighbour who hasn’t had a visitor in weeks. Maybe it’s a stranger at the supermarket whose total comes up just a bit too high.

There is no act too small when it’s done with intention and love.

This is our Kids4Change project in Zambia. Knowing that our money goes this far to support and enrich so many lives is the ultimate purpose in life for us.

Let’s not wait until we ‘make it’ to be generous. Let’s live generously now.

Let’s shift the narrative from what can I get to what can I give? Because when we give from the heart, life has a way of giving back in abundance.

And that is true wealth. That is what it means to be rich.
