Preparing for Baby’s Cake Smash Photo Shoot

Celebrating your baby’s 1st or 2nd birthday with a cake smash is a wonderful memory to capture in a professional cake smash photo shoot. A cake smash is messy and a lot of fun too! Even though these are fun experiences, it might be necessary to prepare baby for it, especially if they are turning 1 and haven’t experienced cake before.

Cake smash photo shoots are held here in the studio on The Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells. The studio is warm, light and very relaxed so that you and baby can feel at home.

  1. Just before the cake smash, get baby used to sitting in an uncontrolled environment, in other words not in a high chair or at a table. Just enough so that they’ll be prepared, but not too much that it becomes a habit you have to break later.

  2. Introduce baby to messy cake, maybe a small cupcake. Let them eat it without cleaning their mouths and hands straight away. This will give them the feeling that it’s ok to dive right in without remorse! This will help them get used to the new texture (if they haven’t had it before) and taste.

  3. Some babies feel vulnerable and insecure when they are not fully clothed. So think about letting baby eat with minimal clothing on, for example dungarees with no top underneath, or a little tutu skirt with no top, and bare feet.

  4. Babies still need their nap times, so be sure to let them nap before the cake smash so that they are fully alert, aware and full energy by the time you come for the photoshoot.

5. Babies like to bash things, so when you introduce them to cake, perhaps let them have a wooden spoon. There’s a chance they will automatically connect with the cake with the wooden spoon. By the time they come for their own cake smash, they’ll be a little familiar.

6. To maximise the photo shoot feel free to accessorise with any additional sweets or small edibles baby is familiar with - you could put these on the cake to get baby interested and keen to dive in. Also think about party hats or toys that you can add to the environment to make baby feel comfortable and more at home.

Remember to bring a change of clothing for your baby and for you, just in case you get cake on you.
